Meanwhile, another report issued Wednesday states there is a “surprising” move by buyers in the direction of the higher-end iPhone 3GS at $199 and $299, versus the $99 iPhone 3G.

Analyst Turley Muller, on his blog Financial Alchemist, said that with the carrier grants, Apple profits from well after what it expends to construct each iPhone. All three forms of the telephone profit from more than 58 per hundred margins, with the 32GB iPhone 3GS bearing the most money-making 59.6 per hundred margin.

“Going ahead Apple will identify higher iPhone income bearing a higher whole margin,” Muller writes. “As iPhone income as a percentage or share of total income rises, the influence of the higher iPhone (gross margin) on general (gross margin) will intensify. This will assuage margin stresses Apple faces in other areas.”

Muller proceeds on to propose that the high profitability of the iPhone has permitted Apple to smaller charges on its MacBook Pro lineup without having any effect on the company’s earnings.
